Olympic Purple Twins
Olympic Purple Twins
"Olympic Purple Twins” What a shoot this was! Another “favorite” for me from the trip and of my career. I slogged through the tide, over rocks and stones and through running waters to get to the location I wanted, the weather was junk, clouds and almost no hope of any decent light but I had spent 7 hours to get here and would travel 7 more to get to my next spot so this one opportunity was taking me 14 hours to get.
I was cold, wet, tired, a bit cranky and feeling the lonely that comes with being on the road for as long as I had been by this point. I setup and composed, got a warm respite from some folks beach camping and then as the day faded to night there was a tiny, almost imperceptible, break in the clouds that gave just enough light for this long exposure to blend day and night and come out purple. The water is perfectly milky and smooth, the rocks are crystal clear and the image makes me smile every time I see it. I don’t often put my own work up around the house, I’d run out of walls entirely too soon but this one is already printed out and hung with pride and joy. I’ve never seen a day I thought was going to go so badly give this much back in just a few moments. Topping it off was that on my slog back to my car my best friend called me and kept my spirits high. I hadn’t even determined if I had gotten this sharply or not and my hands were so cold I daren’t look at the camera for fear of dropping it in the water. This image stands on its own without my story, I’ve shown it to people and they have no idea what it took to get or what I was feeling that day but when I do tell them I feel them sort of share that joy and excitement and then it turns into a sort of wonder. - I hope you enjoy.
